And there it is...

The proverbial 5th inning meltdown by Pelfrey. I knew he had it in him.

Nice to see the pitch count up at 100 by inning 5 again. I suppose there's something to be said for consistency.

It is sometimes difficult to watch Beltran at the plate. That guy can take a called strike 3 with the best of them. Watching him eat two yesterday was reminiscent of playoffs '06, final out. I wonder why he takes so many strike 3s looking? Even if he's sitting on another pitch and doesn't get that one, he still has to find a way to throw out a defensive swing to at least try to foul it off...

Pagan's come back to Earth a little bit, eh?

Church keeps on rolling, tho.

If Pagan ends up near .290 to .300, with OBP near .340+, I'd consider that pretty good for him considering his (limited) career stats. Also, Alou apparently might be back in a few games, so Pagan will be relinquished to being endy chavez's bench buddy.

As for Church, given what we gave up for him I think the bar has to be higher, I'd really like to see him around .300+ with OBP of at least .370 or .380, with at least 70-80 RBIs. We really could use at least 2 players to put up #s like that to fill in around reyes and wright.

Delgado is done. The only question is, if he is still batting below .250 in a month or so what are they going to do? He's killing us, and I don't think it's a temporary slump.

In his last 5 games, Pagan is 3/19, or .158.

That's fine, you're going to have ups and downs, and the guy wasn't going to his .380 this year. If he ends the year in the .280 area, and plays good D, for a 4th or 5th OF that's just fine.

BTW, if coming into the year you said Church had to hit .300 I'd have said you're cracked. The guy's been more of a power hitter than contact hitter through his career thus far.

Of course, the way he's hitting now, who knows?

.280/20/80 would have been my expectation, and that's OK but not winning pennants if he's your 5 hitter.

If Church goes on to hit .310/25/95, and continues to be as clutch as he has been (.368 w/ RISP), he might be your 5 hitter and relieve some of the Delgado issue, who could be dropped to 6.

Hey, Fernando Tatis could probably play some 1B...
