Personally, I'm kinda torn...
But leaning toward no. The slim pickings in this year's FA class is really making me ponder the possibility though.

I would say no, only for the fact that it's the "reverse" type of trade we need. Instead of us giving up several prospects for one big name, I think we need to give up one big name and get several prospects in return. My guess is F-Mart and nearly all of our top "can't-miss" prospects have just been highly overrated, but even still I'd prefer to trade some combo of Reyes, Beltran and Delgado to get a boatload of prospects or promising rookies in return.
My thinking is that '09 is obviously shot, and I also think we have no hope in 2010. So I'd rather take the necessary steps now to have a solid foundation in place for 2011 and beyond.
Well... Hallady has one year left on his deal? We won't be able to afford reupping him long term unless we bring in no other players.
so, if we're willing to commit to having Pagan in LF, Frenchy in RF, and Murph at 1B for next year, it's a possiblity. Dumping Delgado, Schneider and Castillo's salaries might make it possible without bloating the payroll too much.
Bottom line it the offense would be dreadful unless Murph returns to last season's form, Frenchy returns to '06 form, and Reyes and Beltran can stay healthy. If all those things were to happen, getting Hallady could make sense. OF course, Roy himself is a thirty-something power pitcher, so how much more gas does he have in the tank? You'd probably have to get 4 top notch years out of him to make a deal like the one the Jays proposed.
Bottom line for me: no, because I don't actually think we're going to have Reyes and Beltran healthy enough, or healthy at the same time, to win a championship. Without that, what's the point? I'd rather develop these youngsters b/c we're not going to be competitive for a championship until past Roy's prime.
More important than whether we would do the deal, it tells me a lot that Omar won't do the deal. Either he simply can't add the payroll, or he's also made the calculation that we have to deconstruct and reassemble.
All factors that entered my mind as well.
Devil's advocate: do we think F-Mart is gonna ever stay healthy and pan out, are Parnell and Niese good minor-leaguers at best, and is Tejada realistically gonna be the real deal?
If we're overrating our guys again, picking up Halladay is the way to go. We'd have an unstoppable 1-2, Pelf as a solid 3, Maine at 4, and then whoever we wanna stuff in the 5 hole (sounds dirty, really isn't).
Plus, in a down year for FA's, Halladay's presence would help attract better players who are looking for rings (Bay? Probably not. Holliday? Maybe. Hudson? Hmmm...).
Ditch Delgado and Schneider--save $18 mil right there. Don't re-up Putz--$8.5 mil. Wagner's $10.5 comes off as well. Try to move Beltran--$19 mil or so. Reyes--about $8 mil. If we took prospects back for those guys and did not add massive payroll (we're already down about $64m from above), we'd be able to swing a new contract for Doc.
I personally think we can get by (and absolutely contend) with something resembling this:
CF Pagan
2B Hudson
3B Wright
LF Holliday
RF Francoeur
1B Murphy
C Santos
SS Everett/Eckstein
Santana
Halladay
Pelfrey
Maine
Perez
Much less if we can swing Crawford in a trade (maybe Reyes?)
Marquis (major turn-around), Lackey and Bedard are available as FA's and could negate the need for Halladay.
I'd probably still look to shed some payroll and give Bedard a good chunk o'change, try to trade for Crawford, and sign Holliday, Hudson, and Eckstein or Everett.
That gives us:
CF Crawford
2B Hudson
3B Wright
LF Holliday
RF Francoeur
1B Murphy
C Santos
SS Eckstein/Everett
Santana
Bedard
Pelfrey
Maine
Perez
I think we do have a realistic chance at this lineup though:
LF Crawford
2B Hudson
3B Wright
CF Beltran
RF Francoeur
1B Johnson/Laroche?/Murphy?
C Santos
SS Eckstein
Phenomenal defense and solid hitting with a lot of good gap power (plays into our park design perfectly) and high intelligence.
And gritty/gutty...
Crawford: now that's what I'm talking about.
I dunno about all this Holliday talk. You just talked me out of him a few weeks ago!
I can't see O-Dog leaving the best team in the NL to come to the Mets to "compete for a championship".
Is Putz' contract really up at the end of this year?
Holliday is a nice player but not "The Man" that will be a saivor. And he will probably get cheaper as the Oakland #'s pile up (or actually, don't).
I think we hold an $8.5m option on Putz for next season.
And a lot of my thought process re:O-Dog was based on if we got Halladay, which would make the Mets a heavy favorite for a title.
$8.5 million to rehabilitate?
Nice work, if you can get it.
$8.5 million to rehabilitate?
Nice work, if you can get it
, "said Billy Wagner."
Zing!
