By the numbers

Wright's numbers by month are ridiculous, check this out:

Month / HR / RBI / AVG / OBP
April / 0 / 6 / .244 / .370
May / 8 / 22 / .294 / .355
June / 6 / 16 / .323 / .411
July / 4 / 22 / .333 / .402
August / 6 / 21 / .394 / .516

His numbers in August are just plain silly. I don't think I've seen a turnaround like that on Mets before.

No question he's doing the job. Carrying the offense right now. Hopefully he can continue producing through Sept & Oct. I don't know about .400, but a couple more months around his season averages can't be considered a bad job, IMO.

On the flip side, thinking a bit more about Jose, I'm wondering if the return of Pedro will boost him a bit. Jose this year doesn't seem to be having as much fun as the Jose of years' past, and maybe having that freak show around on the bench will help him relax a bit.

Jose is an interesting one to look at the numbers. There is an overall downward trend in several categories if we look by month (AVG and OBP specifically), which perhaps argues for fatigue catching up. I am not surprised this is the case; in fact, I'm surprised the same hasn't happened to Wright this year. (Especially if we attribute at least part of Wright's dropped production post-All-Star break last year due to the home run derby wearing him out.)

On the other hand, in many other important statistical categories Reyes' numbers have stayed the same or improved by month (e.g. SBs, CS, RBIs, etc.) So I think with Reyes there is still the other factor of experience level: he is still a very spurty player, and he has weeks where he is red hot, followed by weeks of ice cold. As he matures I would expect to see some leveling out of these highs and lows.

In the meantime I don't think it hurts to rest him a game or two. If we can expand the lead to 6 or more games I'd like to see other players rested as well leading up to playoffs, to minimize potential injuries or fatigue. Our team average age is one of the highest, so we'll need to steal as much rest as possible.
