Glad to see Pelf shut it down as I'd hoped, although I was hoping he had turned a corner to move beyond his standard 3 runs and 100 pitches in 5-6 innings. One really positive thing about him is that as far as I can remember, I've never seen him give up runs in first inning. In fact, he rarely gives up runs until 3rd or 4th inning. I think he really would be solid coming out of the pen in the playoffs. If they don't consider him ahead of Sele / Scho / Mota and even Sosa out of the pen at this point, I don't get it.
I think you have to be considering Feliciano / Pelfrey / Heilman / Maine / Sosa / Wagner as your main guys, with one more to boot (probably Mota, since they don't seem to want to put Humber in there). Then your starters are Pedro, Glav, Duque (assuming healthy) and Perez.
What do you think?
I also would skip at least one or two of Maine's next starts, since he must be injured.
If Duque is definitely out (more below on this), I think your assessment is probably correct. I would hope though that they rank Pelf more valuable coming out of the pen than anyone except Feliciano (and Wagner of course, since his spot is unique). If we see Scho or Sele coming out of the pen at any point, post-season is over. Mota / Sosa / Heilman are wildcards, since they are either brilliant or garbage, there's no middle road.
For Duque, if he misses 2nd playoffs in a row I can't begin to express my frustration. We are counting heavily on his post-season success to be a significant part of our chance in playoffs, and losing him again is a major blow. This is another reason why the Mets choking to tighten this race is a big blow: if they had a comfortable 6-8 game lead at this point, they could have afforded to rest starters like Duque and Maine down the stretch, to give them a better shot at full health in playoffs. They could then give Humber or others a shot at a start in a relatively meaningless game in the meantime. But with the season on the line, there is no such luxury. No rest for Beltran, Wright, or Reyes either.
BTW, the next 4 games will be extremely telling since the rotation is almost exactly what Fredo called:
Glav/Pedro/Perez/Maine
Since the offense has been doing well of late, and we dominate at Florida, it will be interesting to see what performance and effort we get from our starting 4.
I have to say I am very worried about Maine though: I don't consider Beckett a wuss and a blister problem shut him down for a month this year, and also in previous years.
