SP

Mets need to trade for a starting pitcher. Period. The only guaranteed 6+ innings guy right now is Maine. Glavine looks like he'll be very dependable for 5 innings, but usually starts to fall apart in 6th. More importantly, we can't bank on him and El Duque to be healthy all season. Perez + Pelfrey are of course also huge question marks.

We all knew heading into the season that CHP is garbage, and he couldn't have reinforced that point more strongly than with last night's crapola. I don't for a second believe Jorge Sosa is a reinvented pitcher. Humber - while extremely exciting and likely to be one of our horses for years to come - is still too young to pull.

Bottom line - with Delgado and Wright ice cold, and Green/Alou/Reyes/Beltran having to cool off at some point, we are really going to need more dependable starting pitching.

Bottom line: without another legit starting pitcher, we won't be in first place by the time pedro returns in aug. Unless we get lucky and both perez and pelfrey settle in. If so we're all set, but i just think that's a very big roll of the dice.

valentin's injury is also bad news, losing him for a month is not good. he and green had really established a rhythm in bottom of lineup. but perhaps more importantly, he was very good defensively - with him and reyes you could count on a lot of DPs.

if you think i'm pessimistic, check out this metsgeek link where they are questioning whether maine is for real. i agree maine has been a bit lucky so far and in all likelihood he'll have some problems with BBs and HRs at some point, but i'm way more positive about his upside.

i'm at least confident in his start in our rotation.

I figured after the earlier hubbub, all our loyal readers new a D.C. reference when they heard one.

Pelfrey with a nice outing tonight. Gave up 3 in the first, then settled in and held them scoreless over the next 5 and 2/3.

Honestly, I'm more worried about the pen than the rotation. And if the pen was doing a good job, it would make the starters look a lot better cause Willie wouldn't be letting them dig themselves in quite as deep in the 6th and 7th.

Heilman is soooo overrated. You guys no I've never been a particular fan, but for the love of all, lefties are hitting .430 off of him. That's just embarrassing.

Wagner looks shakier than last year. Feliciano's numbers are good but his slider doesn't look quite as sharp as it did last year.

On the upside, Sele has looked good as a long man, and Joe Smith has been great.

But with Heilman and Wagner as our 8th and 9th inning guys, I never feel like the game's in the bag.

Meanwhile, Henry Owens looks like he's off to promising start closing games for FL. Grrr.

Our lineup has been handcuffed by the likes of "aces" nolasco, chico, and fogg in 3 of the last 6 games. Not a good sign. For all the high averages and OBPs, we surely seem to strand a lot of runners, and especially a lot of RISP with less than 2 outs.

Maybe wright has adjusted his swing and is out of his slump - that would be tremendously good news.

Joe smith has been unbelievable, and it's not hard to see why with all the movement on his pitches. No way he's hittable. Plus, he has great control, pounding the strike zone. He and feliciano are definitely rock solid as fredo mentioned. Of course, i've never been a fan of wagner (primarily due to his bloated, overpaid contract), and seen nothing so far this season to change my mind. To fredo's point, i saw people on metsgeek complaining heavily about heilman, saying randolph is really dropping the ball here by not just moving to make smith the automatic 8th inning setup guy. I think if smith and heilman both keep moving in their current directions, willie will have no choice but to do this.

Pelfrey had a nice recovery last night but I'm still concerned unless he improves his control. Half his pitches last night were balls. He's going to be in trouble if he keeps giving up a lot of BBs and hit batsmen.

nice to see 2 solid starts in a row for perez.. it's all about control.
