Glimpse of the future

How'd you like the look of Chavzez, Beltran, and Gomez in left to right? Future looks pretty good, what a combination of hitting, power, speed, and defense. Of course, the way Alou and Green have been killing the ball, it would be nice to keep these vets healthy as long as possible.

By the way, has Beltran been on fire recently or what? .319/8 HRs/29 RBIs/24 R. Once Delgado heats up, look out.

Speaking of the future, what does it hold for perez? Here are two interesting sets of stats from metsgeek.com that look very promising:

The last time Ollie K’ed more than a better an inning for the season: 2004

Ollie’s numbers in 2004: 2.98 ERA / 1.15 WHIP / .207 BAA

Ollie’s numbers in 2007: 3.00 ERA / 1.12 WHIP / .204 BAA

In the off season I said if Ollie puts up the same stats as 2004 he could win a Cy Young…..if he continues to do what he is doing (albeit more consistently) he will test that theory……

Perez is averaging 9.21 K/9, good for fourth in the National League. Rick Peterson has turned him into a strike-throwing machine. Look at yesterday’s game: 109 pitches, 70 strikes. Ollie’s only walking three batters per nine innings, which is better control than he’s ever shown.

Oliver Perez, BB/9:
2002 SD 4.80
2003 SD 5.64
2003 PIT 4.70
2004 PIT 3.72
2005 PIT 6.12
2006 PIT 6.04
2006 NYM 4.17
2007 NYM 3.00

He’s back to his 2004 level of performance. He’s striking out a few less guys– in 2004 he K’ed 10.80 per nine innings– but he’s also walking fewer guys. By the end of the season we’ll be referring to Ollie as our ace.
