Pedro done for the year

with a torn tendon in his calf.

Guess that settles the question of whether he's starting game 1.

So now the rotation is:

Duque
Glavine
Trax
Maine

Relievers:

Oliver
Hernandez
Feliciano
Bradford
Mota
Heilman
Wagner

That's what I'm guessing, anway.

Well, even with Pedro the Mets were always handicapped as likely having the worst starting pitching of any of the playoff teams. So it's going to come down to what we always figured and how Minaya's built this team so far - our bats, and our bullpen.

As for Pedro, this is what you get from him over the last several years. He is frail and injured at the end of every season.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Pedro hang it up after this season--I read one comment where he wished he had rehab starts instead of ML starts over the past couple of weeks, b/c of what they did to his "numbers." Clearly the Mets have to build the staff next year around the idea that Pedro won't be there at playoff time.

I think our starting pitching is equal to the Cards and Dodgers, and maybe just a touch worse than the Padres. Of course, if the Cards complete their mad el-choke-o and let the Astros in, they have the best starting pitching. But not unbeatable, if our guys are playing aggressively.

Two interesting snippets from an article in today's Newsday.

1) Post-season performance

Glavine is 12-15 with a 3.44 ERA in 32 games with the Braves. Hernandez is 9-3 with 2.55 ERA in 19 games with the Yankees and White Sox.

2) Glavine's take on the Pedro situation:

"It's the least invasive solution to the problem," said Glavine, who plans to make an abbreviated start of about 75-to-80 pitches Saturday in Washington. "This way, he [El Duque] is on turn and I'm on turn. We were in a situation where one guy's problem was messing up two guys."

Mets-'stros or Mets-AL team is a tough pitching matchup. It will require our starters to dig deep, bullpen to play as well as they have all season, and aggressive play as Fredo mentions. In particular we need the speed of Reyes, Beltran, Wright, and Chavez to manufacture runs.

Glavine commented the other day that it appeared he would be stuck with either short or long rest between last regular season start and first playoff start. So this is definitely a big help for him. He made some other comment that seemed to indicate he might not have the warmest feelings for pedro.

TBS showed stats of Mets pitchers in postseason, similar to Newsday. El Duque was best, with Glavine and Pedro not as good.

Interesting quote from Pedro: "When I'm out or hurting, obviously we're not going to do as good," Martinez said. (from espn.com)

Unfortunately, it's not true. As posted the other day on ESPN.com: The Mets are 28-26 (.519) in the 54 games Pedro Martinez has started in his two years with the club (17-14 in 2005, 11-12 in 2006), compared to 148-118 (.556) over the same span with any other starting pitcher.

Now word he has a torn rotator cuff, out 8 months. That means he'll miss at least up until the All-Star Break next season. My guess? He doesn't want to rehab. He wants to hang it up.

Also, Trax will miss his start tomorrow to deal with a family situation. I guess that means he might get skipped in the first round. Maine is the #3?
