Willie

Gotta love Randolph:

Asked after last night's game about whether he had things to do in Pittsburgh, Willie Randolph replied, "Yeah. Maybe sip a little champagne. Be nice. Smoke my cigar and keep going. Keep going, man." (From NYPost.com)

I've been so impressed with Willie. The cohesiveness of this team reflects very well on him. No one's been whining about playing time, disrespecting the fans or showing up the organization. It seems like every year it gets harder to make these millionaire athletes put team before self, but this group does it well--to the credit of the manager and the players.

In re-reading my comment, it occurred to me that one might ask, "why would a player a show up the organization? Or disrepect fans? Aren't you setting the bar for managerial competence kind of low?"

And I would be inclined to agree with that logic, if not for the fact that a certain Met had received in-game haircuts. Or that another pair of Mets abandoned their teammates and played cards in the clubhouse during a playoff game. Or that another Met had a mid-game masturbation session in the bullpen. Or that one stole a baseball from a 7 year old kid that was trying to get an autograph. Or that another failed to show up at a ticker-tape parade because he was too hung over or strung out on coke. Or that one threw firecrackers at fans, injuring a bunch of kids. I could go on, but you get the idea.
