Pedro

Well, this should lock up Glavine as #1 starter. Pedro couldn't pick a worse time to fall apart. This underlines my comment to Crawford post below, that I don't want to trade any of our young pitchers at this point. We desperately need as much starting pitching as possible heading into next year.

Furthermore, when are we finally going to not end a season getting our asses kicked up and down the field by the Braves? This is the same type of season-ending meltdown that has cost us a playoff spot in previous seasons, and will be a problem in future years when the Phils or Marlins are a lot closer to us down the stretch. While Mets clearly have a solid GM in Minaya, Phillies' Gillick has quite a track record as well, so I don't expect Phillies to go anywhere but up next year.

Nice to see oliver also continuing his end-of-season meltdown. That, plus our complete inability to score any runs over the last two weeks should really score us. This is the exact situation I worried about heading into September - a complete lack of focus and execution down the stretch.

I stick with my earlier prediction - if Houston slips into playoffs, they stand an excellent chance of knocking us out in 1st round. We can't match up to their pitching. Phillies will be tough too, but at least we'd only see them over 7.

If Houston slips in, they will be the NL Central champs and we won't play them in the first round, unless the Phils are the wild card team. As things stand, we'll play the Dodgers.

Oliver might get left off the post-season roster. With Pedro's meltdown, Willie might need Maine to serve as the long man, since he could double as a Pedro stand-in should Pedro be physically unready to start game 2 or 3.

It's hard to have a lot of confidence with the way they've been playing, but this lineup can bust out in a hurry. I've still got faith, but it's not quite the intense faith of two weeks ago. Game 1 of the post season is going to be a big deal for us. If we get out of the gate quick, all this week's junk will be forgotten in a hurry.

BTW, is Duque or Glavine the game 1 starter? Duque's been better since he's back from the DL, and he's something like 9-3 in 12 post season starts, IIRC.
