Chip caray...

...is by far the most annoying announcer in all of sports. Besides the fact that he is a complete tool and knows nothing about baseball, he is just downright irritating. Stupid statements like "there goes the no-hit bid" when johan gives up a single in the first inning are typical of his mind-numbingly dumb commentary. I always hated having to listen to him call mets-braves games on TBS.

Speaking of TBS announcers, Jim Kaat made a similar point to the one I've been making. He said that as a pitcher, you really learn about yourself when it is late in the game and you are tired but forced to pitch another inning. He said today's starters are too coddled, which is my point in particular for Perez, Pelfrey and to some extent Maine.

If I'm Willie I sit those three down, tell them they are now on 120 pitch counts for the near future, and they will find a way to get through at least 6 innings no matter what. I don't care if they are down 15-1, have given up 10 walks and hit 5 batters and are having the worst outing of their career. To me, pulling them consistently after exactly 100 pitches and not forcing them to close out a sloppy inning is the equivalent of government handouts. That is, if you are never held accountable to clean up your own mess, and can always look to someone else to do it, you will never improve. Willie needs to force them to improve by raising the bar, and making them realize they will have to find a way to pitch out of difficult situations, whether these situations arise because of their own poor pitching or because of fielding errors.

Either they will respond positively and rise to the challenge, or they won't in which case they were never going to be effective pitchers anyway IMO.
