Put a fork in 'em

The Mets are done. They are the very definition of mediocre: they've played .500 ball for over 160 straight games, they score exactly as many runs as they give up, and they are right in the middle of the pack in the NL in almost every statistical category (ERA, BAA, BA, R, RBI, E, Fld % ...) They are poor in all three aspects of the game: pitching, hitting, and fielding.

Claims of 'just wait until so-and-so gets back from the DL' are pointless. As if this old, broken team is going to go the rest of the season without significant injuries? To expect that Alou, Duque, Pedro, Castillo, Valentin, Castro, Delgado and others won't be spending a big amount of remaining season on DL would not only defy common sense, but also a consistent 2+ year track record. And even if they did, it wouldn't change the fact that the Mets are poorly coached at the plate (as seen by number of stranded runners), bullpen is poorly managed by Willie, and the team doesn't play with a win-at-all-costs attitude.

Good news: the Mets get to face Webb and Haren in 2 of their next 3 games. Any takers how that'll turn out?

Scmetties'll take 2 outta 3.

Bank on it...

If so, that would mean Maine wins and Johan beats Haren. I doubt pelfrey's beating webb, but who knows. weirder things have happened.

I've been thinking about it a bit more, and I think beyond the obvious issues of injuries and perhaps overrated talent, a major problem with the Mets is (and has been) a lack of "team" and a lack of leadership.

When I watch the Red Sox play, and particularly how their vets play compared to their AAA call-ups, you can clearly see a sense of team. Everyone is in sync, and they also know their role to play. Not everyone is out their trying to be manny ramirez; instead, they each do what they are best at, to help the team. Think about the '86 Mets. Dykstra and Mookie platooned as did Teufel and Backman, and that's the way it was because it was best for the team. Now, when you even hint that Delgado or others might platoon they start whining like little babies. There is no sense of "team" on this team. Everyone is either trying to do too much selfishly (i.e., going for HR and meekly flying out when a bunt or single to advance the runner would have done), or expecting someone else to pick up the load.

And quite honestly, I have to reiterate that whether Willie could be a good manager somewhere with some other team, this is not the team for him to manage. With no strong leaders in the clubhouse, and Wright too young to truly lead an entire clubhouse, it falls on Willie to be a more vocal and outspoken leader. But he is not that type of person.

Omar has assembled a flawed team in that it is very injury prone, and lacks character and leadership. Willie is not the right guy to lead this team. And most of all, the players are by and large losers with the wrong attitude. I think a wholesale dump of most of these players before the trading deadline to teams in contention is the best thing they can do for their future. This team, besides not doing anything in '08, will not do anything for the next 3 years either.

the chances of taking 2 out of 3 when facing Webb and Haren are seven thousand three-hundred and twenty to one!
