The fat lady has sung

And so it ends for Willie, Peterson, and Nieto. As I've said before, Omar is at least equally to blame as Willie, and the way in which he handled this whole thing speaks volumes about his poor leadership and management skills. To drag this out as long as he did, to leak the names, and then to make them fly all the way to CA only to can them at midnight is just pathetic. Omar is easily coming out looking like the biggest loser in all of this. And I'm interested to see why Peterson got axed.

Someone over at the geek summed it up nicely:

Could this have been handled with less grace, tact and respect? I’m embarrassed to be a Mets fan today.

Funny: A month or two ago I’d be doing cartwheels over this move. Now I think it’s just a band-aid.

The moral of the story, as we've written several times, is that the example set at the top (whether in sports or business) sets the tone for the whole organization. This team has floundered under the Wilpons and will continue to do so, and I remain pessimistic that the team will ever win a WS under their sole ownership.

At the end of the day you have to ask why teams like the Pats and Sox do well, and inevitably it starts with good ownership that sets a good tone and culture, which translates into who they install as GM and how they guide them, which in turn determines who the GM hires as manager and so on. The Mets front office is and has been a debacle for a long time. They have assembled an old, broken team, and have perhaps one of the weakest farm systems in the majors. Good luck with that, and unfortunately for the Wilpons they can point fingers wherever they want but ultimately the buck stops with them.

Serious, professional ownership never would have let the situation with Willie unfold the way it did this year. It's an absolute disgrace.
