Interesting. I definitely don't take that at face value. The Mets will be a late entry in the bidding for any big name player, or else it would be too easy for the agents to use them as leverage against smaller market clubs.
That said, Lugo's a free agent who has been rumored to be coming to the Mets since the All Star break, and it fits that he'd be an Omar-type player. We could probably get him on the cheap, since his abyssmal second half of the year looked nothing like the rest of his career. He's an excellent fielder, which will make SHK happy, and is basically a .275 BA / .335 OBP / .380 Slg guy. I am a little concerned that his numbers in TB were a lot higher than everywhere else, even excluding his nosedive with Dodgers this year.
Also, I found this on MSNBC:
"Lugo was traded to Dodgers, where he was switched to second base. It is unlikely he will re-sign with L.A., however, because he wants to remain a shortstop.
'I am a shortstop,' he said after the deal."
Still, he's a guy right in his prime, with 4-8 more good years left (you'd figure). It could be match:
Reyes LoDuca Beltran Delgado Wright Green Milledge Lugo
Guess this is what Omar has in mind, if he's really not chasing any of the big name FA's.
