Worser news from the bigs

Delgado could be gone for season, and Putz is apparently damaged goods. So says the Post.

That's two big losses. Sheff in left could go a long way towards mitigating the loss in run production. If he gets hot, the lineup could be OK.

Putz has clearly been ineffective the last two weeks, and I was wondering if he was hurt. Two games ago, he was pinging the gun at 92 on his fastball. This was a guy who was known for throwing high '90's. You're not going to be able to replace Putz in the pen. Parnell's going to have to grow up too fast if Putz misses extended time, but with his arm, maybe he's up to the challenge.

Unfortunately, the more likely scenario with Parnell (since it happens every year with mets pen) is that we end up overworking him, such that down the stretch when we really need him he's useless.

The smart play now is to trade for another starter and keep Ollie in the pen for good. This gives us some long relief. I've just about had it with Reyes' complete lack of maturation; his baserunning decisions are still mind boggling.

I'm all for trading for a starter, if the pitcher they bring back is a signficant upgrade over Maine/Redding/Livan.

If he's a front side of the rotation starter that will be pitchiing game 2 or 3 in the playoffs, I'm willing to give up a meaningful chip. I don't want to trade for another backside of the rotation guy. We've got enough starting "depth" already.

I agree. Trading for anything less than a legit #2 is meaningless. We have a bunch of #4s or 5s, we don't need more "lima time."
