*I'm disappointed that he hasn't progressed/matured as much as I would have expected by this point, particularly w.r.t. OBP, but there's no getting around the fact that he is an explosive, exciting player.

I can't believe bringing in Roberto Alomar (which did seem smart on paper at the time) makes your top list--even taking hindsight into account...
And if you're going to go historic, why no '86 mentions?

Yup, I was referring to Kelvim. Here's why I'm so happy about that deal: it's only one year, for $1.25 M. Finally, Omar seems to understand risk and reward. Not Perez = 3 yrs/$36 M, or Castillo = 4 years/$25 M.
Escobar in a limited 8th inning setup role could be superb. And if he blows, guess what? It only costs us one year, $1.25 M. Well worth the risk.
OK, I hear ya--it's not so much the specific player as it is a glimmer of the fundamental understanding of how to be a GM.

I like a lot more about this team than SHK does but much of that is blind devotion and the remainder is hearty optimism.
Of course, Santana, Wright, and Reyes are at the forefront and I like many of our "2nd tier" guys (Francoeur, Murphy, Pagan). But I also have high hopes for the staff. Maine will be a dominator if he ever stays healthy, Pelf justs needs to get that final piece of the puzzle (whatever it may be) and I still think Ollie will throw the 1st no-hitter for the club.
But that's just me.
Granted, I would've loved to see them do more this off-season but I would've hated to see bad contracts given to mediocre/good players.
Next years FA class is awesome and we should have more room due to a thrifty winter this year (Joe Mauer, anyone? If only...)
Time will tell...and who knows--maybe these guys'll surprise us. Fingers crossed.
I would love nothing more than to see this team surprise everyone and actually play up to expectations this year. But I can't get my hopes up, considering that they didn't bounce back and play with much pride after the '07 or '08 meltdowns.
That said, I was concerned after the Game 7 loss in '06 that it was the type of loss that could crush a team for years, much the way the Marino fake spike sunk the Jets for years. I don't think this team has ever truly recovered from that Cards loss.

That said, if the Metties exceed expectations, you can feel good about being a true fan. In the meantime, SHK and I can feel good about insulating out emotions from the likely suckitude. And if they manage to work their way into pennant race, I'm sure I'll be able to rationalize my way back on the bandwagon.
I would be very happy if the usual suckfest that is the Mets season doesn't appear this year, and they actually played up to expectations. Seeing them return to the playoffs would be exciting.
But I simply have to play the odds here, and the odds say that this starting rotation and lineup aren't going to be good enough or healthy enough to get it done.
