2 Free Agent targets

According to this article, the Mets are planning on pursuing Derek Lowe (who has been reliable but is 35) and closer Brian Fuentes.

Saw that.. D. Lowe is interesting. Very steady guy year to year, solid #s, and good experience with '04 sox. If he were to stay on course he'd be a tremendous #3.

However, at 35 I can't help but think Omar's at it again, pursuing players who were great in their peak but are on the verge of declining. It's like the guy hasn't learned from Delgado, Alou, Pedro, Duque, etc. I like picking up D. Lowe if it's PART of the solution, but not if that's what Omar has in mind as the TOTAL solution for our starters. We need to get a solid #2 guy, and that will require a significant trade.

I like it. Lowe doesn't rely on his fastball so his advancing age is not as much of a concern--hell, it may help the sinker...
And there's no disputing that the guy's a gamer--even if he doesn't have his best stuff he doesn't panic and fold. He battles.

Fuentes is an interesting player. I don't recall seeing a closer who throws softer than he does--he's the Jamie Moyer of closers. But he does get the job done and puts up solid #'s in a hitter's park.

I'm starting to hear about possible trades for closers--George Sherrill, JJ Putz, and a few others. I'm not sold on the idea of trading our dwindling supply of chips for a closer. As I've said in the past, unless you're getting Mariano Rivera, there is no guarantee of a closer's success year-to-year. In fact, the norm seems to be 2 good years then gone...

I'm curious to see how Tampa reacts, win or lose. Do they try to keep this going or, especially if they win, do they pull the Marlins post-title fire sale?
If the clearance signs go up in Tampa, there are lots of parts we could absolutely use...
