Injuries

The two people that are guaranteed to be injured this year, El Duque and Alou, are apparently already banged up.

Orlando Hernandez revealed he had a right toe ligament replaced in the offseason, not surgery to treat a painful bunion as the Mets had announced. The toe surgery was so extreme it shortened El Duque's third toe, causing a difficult adjustment on the mound this spring. The bunion is still there, which only makes it tougher.

Moises Alou had a large bandage and ice pack on his right wrist after yesterday's workout. Alou wouldn't give any details, other than to joke that he hurt himself "punching" Jose Reyes.

NO doubt you are right.

A couple of non-sequitirs:

1) on espn.com, a fantasy baseball writer said that John Maine will be a top-15 pitcher in the NL this year. If this comes true, we're in good shape.

2) Some good reviews coming in for LH SP John Niese and RH RP Kunz (6'5", 250 - ding!)

Is Joe Smith healthy again? Here's a guy who was throwing in the low '90's in April and May and mid-80's thereafter.

I think Joe Smith and Duaner Sanchez are both supposed to be in good shape. Clearly, if one or both of those guys is in top form our pen will be solid, especially if we avoid overworking them with Johan eating innings. Pelf, Heilman, Sanchez, Feliciano, Smith, Wagner, and a few others they can rotate from AAA (Sosa...) should give us a lot strength here.

If Maine or Perez are top 15 this year, we can withstand a loss of Duque or poor outings by Pelf. Of course, if an inevitable injury or tiring of Pedro occurs, that changes a lot, but we have a lot more options now with the return of Sanchez, Pedro, and addition of Johan.
