Omar--you're killing me!!!

What is going on here? Now we trade Brian Bannister, a young pitcher who has shown he can perform at the big league level in the top market, for Ambroix Burgos, a guy who s'ed the bed for Kansas City?

This is getting nuts...Burgos supposedly has "a great upside" and can throw 100. Didn't we just unload two pitchers (Owens and Lindstrom) who had similar arms for some other "great upside" guys from Florida who stank on ice?

I despise playing the race card but Omar is getting ridiculous. He is building a resume of trading white players who have shown glimpses of talent or ability for Hispanic players who have the "great upside" label (remember Jeff Keppinger/Ruben Gotay, anyone?)

Minaya is claiming that Burgos will step into Bradford's role next season. How? Bradford worked so well because of his change of pace and ability to strand inherited runners. Burgos tries to throw through the backstop and blew 12 saves last year--great. Why didn't we just shell out the cash to keep Bradford? Is it because his last name doesn't end with a "z?" I hope not but it's sure starting to look that way...

In other related insanity, Omar is now apparently going full-court press on--wait for it--Mark Mulder!

Wait--wha? Huh? To quote Billy Joe Armstrong, "wake me up when September comes..."

I have to agree that the Mets moves this offseason have been weak and questionable at best, except for moises (although that does fit the minaya mold per DC's comments!) But i at least think alou's bat will help protect wright in lineup.

unless there is something particular that rick peterson likes about burgos that he didn't see with owens and lindstrom, i don't get it.

I saw nothing from Owens that made me believe the majors were in his future. Lindstrom has been mediocre in AA. Don't know about Burgos, but aside from the ongoing Reconquista of Flushing, I can't shed too many tears about Bannister getting dealt. Bannister may never be healthy again, the Mets need more young relievers (which, BTW, is where Maine or Pelfrey will end up), and we have plenty of other young starters (Perez, Humber, and the aforementioned Maine/Pelfrey, whichever one is not in the pen).
Then you still have Dave Williams in reserve if you need another starter, and that's before (and if) Pedro comes back.

The move that really baffles me is the Zito chase. This guy's got a ton of mileage under his belt, is going to get signed for Beltran type money, and is a good but not great pitcher. His best years are way in the rear view, and while his recent past has been good, he hasn't been a post season star by any measure.

Meanwhile, the Dodgers got Schmidt, a power pitcher who would be a much more meaningful addition to the Mets staff at a much cheaper price. Unlike Zito, he's a power pitcher, he required only a 3 year commitment (while Zito will take 5 or 6), and he's shown remarkable durability over the past 4 years (like Zito).

I don't get it. Schmidt/Duque/Glavine/Maine/Humber would have been great.

Zito/Duque/Glavine/Maine/Humber doesn't look as good to me. In fact, it doesn't look any better to me than Duque/Glavine/Maine/Humber/Pelfrey.
