Dodging the bullet

Thank you to Omar for not upping the offer to Barry Zito to the astoundingly ridiculous levels of the San Francisco Giants.

There is no way BZ is worth $18 mil per. The highest paid pitcher in baseball history? You gotta be kidding me. And that psycho in San Fran rationalizes the deal by stating that it gives them a good change to win the NL West--a division where if you're sniffing the .500 mark you're probably 10 games up on the pack. Dope.

So, it looks like we're going with the Glavine, Hernandez, Maine, Perez, Pelfrey rotation (with the possible substitutions of Humber and Co. on the back end). Williams appears destined for the Oliver role. The rest of the pen is kind of a mish-mash which is promising because that's pretty much how I felt it was at the start of last season...

At this point are there any more moves to be made (that would be of any significance or help, that is) or is this the team we go to battle with? Only one man knows--MURRAY HILL!

Thumbs up to your assesment, D.C. We are better off today for not having signed Zito. At least not at anything approaching that price. We'll see what kind of pop is in all those young arms. I actually wouldn't be surprised to see Pelfrey end up in the pen, and have Duque/Glavine/Maine/Humber/Perez in the rotation.

Could Pelfrey be this year's Papelbon? I wouldn't be totally surprised..

Passing on zito was by far the right call. That cash can be much better spent on future free agents.

To me the most disappointing move all offseason was not re-signing bradford. Even though he doesn't throw a lot of innings, it seems to me that $10 M for 3 yrs is worth it for a guy who consistently stepped up in the face of pressure and pitched out of jams. There was no one in that pen that Randolph trusted more to deal with inherited runners than bradford. In fact, i think he was #1 in MLB in inherited runners. at one point he had only let 1 of 40 score or something ridiculous like that.

Not having bradford is especially troubling since Mota's season is basically gone.

I would love to see pelfrey be papelbon, but i doubt omar / randolph will bench $10 M a year wagner.

Well, Mariano set up for Wetteland, and that worked out pretty well.

I'd say you could see a pelfrey-wagner 8-9 punch, much like a few other teams. Could be interesting move, although if sanchez is healthy i'd have to give him the nod. He was pretty awesome last year. Pelfrey still needs to be able to find the strike zone - he doesn't seem confident enough in his stuff yet and dances around the plate resulting in a lot of walks. But hopefully working with peterson he'll settle down over the next year.

If the Mets make no more moves, they should win NL east this year (although Florida and Philly will still be very tough), but I just don't see them competing with top AL teams yet. Pick up of Alou should add some nice pop to middle or back of lineup and protect wright, and I'd guess at this point Omar is waiting to make a trade next season.

On the plus side, if we can hang onto NL East lead through July, we should be getting Pedro and Mota back late summer right when we need them for playoff push. Of course, both of those guys are huge question marks right now.
