Didn't expect the Big Least flameout to come on day 1.
2 #6 seeds upset by 11s (ND & Marquette).
#2 seed and #3 seed from the B.E. combine to go -11 in points against a 14 and 15, and it obviously should've been worse as the fix was in for Nova.
Just to shed some light on how riculously poor Georgetown was, they Got. Blown. Out. By a team from the MAC. (Not the MAAC). And that team was the 9-seed. In the MAC tournament.
This is a flameout of legendary proportions.

On yahoo, the sub-headline on Ohio v G'Town is this: "Never Threatened".
And I don't think they meant G'Town.
Rumors of the Big Beast's demise are greatly exaggerated...

I'd hold off on predictions of flameout until we see how the sweet 16 shapes up. Big East seems to be turning it around on day 2, with dominant wins from WVU and Pitt, and Syracuse with an early lead.
Ultimately this conference should be judged by how its top 4 teams perform, which are cuse, nova, wvu and pitt.
Georgetown was an inexcusable shocker, and really a head scratcher. I watched them in a few games this year, including their solid beating of Duke, and given how balanced and strong they were I was stunned to see them lose. That said, I hate G-town and Uconn, and always celebrate their losses.
Cuse is really starting to tear the ass out of this game... They look like the real deal, maybe I should've put them into the finals after all.
Oh, the flameout was defined as the "best conference of all time" not sending any teams to the FF.
The fact that they had the worst showing of all major conferences--especially in light of the lofty seeding all of their teams had--was just an accelerator on the flameout I saw coming.
BTW, I want props on my email from a week ago. Never got around to posting on the blog, but I told you the B.E. was a lot stronger in mid-Feb than they were in mid-March!
BTW, Cuse beating a 16 seed by 20 points means nothing. That's what you're supposed to do in a 1-16 game. See KU and Duke for other examples of same. See UK if you want to see what a real throttling looks like (up 30 at the half, reserves playing whole second half just to not embarrass the other team. Ditto for WVU in the 2-15. What Nova did yesterday was an embarrassment. Doesn't mean they can't come back, but boy, coupled with their 5 losses down the stretch, you can see where this team is not hitting on all cylinders. That said, I'm praying ODU or BU takes 'Nova out, b/c basketball is a game of matchups, and they are a really bad matchup for Duke. 'Cuse is a better team, but an easier matchup for Duke.
I listened to this buffoon on the radio on Wed. tell the greater New York metro that 6 B.E. teams seemed likely for the sweet 16. His callers were arguing b/c they thought 7 seemed more reasonable.
I'd love to know what his take is now. Just not enough to look up when he's on and actually tune in.
Well, keep in mind that 'Nova didn't look particularly good in their opening round game last year either, before they picked it up and went to the final four. Since UConn was in final four last year that gave B.E. two teams in. I'd be surprised if they don't have at least one team in this year.
That lowly B.E. team 'Nova also gave the Dookies a pretty good thrashing in the tourney last year, IIRC.
See prior comment re: matchups. I'd expect them to be a tough out for us this year as well.
If they get that far.

After all, for all the talk about how Duke had the easiest draw of the 1 seeds, the South is now the only bracket where all top 5 seeds advanced to round 2.
Duke is on track to play Texas A&M and possibly Baylor in Houston. Basically home games for both those schools.
Of course it's possible that 'Nova could play both as well, is A&M takes out Duke. Not sure if this kind of home court is at play for other under-seeds in the regionals.
But I doubt it.
