Hewitt turns down the Johnnies

This does not bode well for SJU. It's just impossible for them to come up with the cash to lure away the big money guys. Not when the taxpayers can easily support millions at these state schools.

If Pitino just wants to move and get a clean start, that would be great for SJU. He's one of the few with the cred to make a difference who is still enough of an old timer (and paesan) that the job still has some juice for him.

Other than that, I can't imagine who they'd get that's going to help them make a splash and change the aura so that they can land some recruits.

People on the FAN keep talking about Billy Donovan. Why the eff would Donovan even consider it?

They already sort of reached out to Donovan through a wealthy alum, and he said no, not surprisingly.

After Hewitt they are targeting Seth Greenberg of VT, a LI native.

Bottom line for me is that unless they land a coach who can improve recruiting, they are going nowhere. I watched many of their games this year and I have to say I was pretty impressed with the level of effort. I think Roberts did a good job coaching them to play aggressive D, stick well to their man, move a lot on offense, good formations, etc.

They did miss a lot of FTs at the end of games, and the raw talent level was a notch lower than it needs to be in Big East. So for me, the only way they can improve is to somehow recruit higher caliber players. Obviously a big name like a Donovan or a Pitino could haul in major talent for them, but I'm not sure about Hewitt or Greenberg.

I obviously can speak to Greenberg having watched his team play ~15 games in the past few years in the ACC.

The guy is a competitor, his fight filters down to his players. No game is easy against Va Tech, regardless of whether you have more talent. While I don't know much about him off the court, the rumors that float around is that he is not a good guy. But as an X's and O's guy, SJU could do a lot worse.

Of course, I don't think he's a game changer from a recruitment level either.

Don't really follow college muchless the REDMEN... But I've heard one name thrown around. No real experience unless you consider playin in the NBA experience. But darn sure he'd be able to recruit and it would get people excited. Mr. Mark Jackson
