When it rains, it pours

I have never seen a team experience as many injuries as Yankees. In the last few days alone, added to the list were Clemens, Giambi, and Mientkiewicz. I honestly can't think of any team in any sport having as many injuries as quickly as Yankees.

I have a feeling that Sunday's game will be the start of something big for the Yanks. If Clemens makes it up, I bet the Yanks make the AL East real close. And can you really bank on Boston having the mental toughness to hold on when then Yanks are breathing down their necks?

I'm not so sure. Normally I'd be right with you on this one, saying Boston will fold, and Yankees always come through. But I've got to be honest - the Yankees really, really suck. They are just not good in ANY aspect - starting pitching, relief pitching, fielding, and even their hitting is only looking above average at best - certainly not the most threatening... Plus with all the injuries, I have a hard time seeing Yankees doing anything this year, except maybe wild card. Every time they win a "big" game and someone projects this is their turning point, they promptly go out and puke up a few ugly losses in a row..

Bottom line - their starting pitching and bullpen stink, and unless they put up 6-8 runs per game, they are not a threat. And their lineup, especially with Giambi gone, is really not that scary anymore.

On the other hand, while I think some of Boston's hot hitters (youkilis and lowell specifically) will cool off, good pitching is good pitching and that will carry you. They have about as good a starting rotation + pen as anyone, and solid offense. In many ways they are like the pats - they get a lot of production from a lot of relatively no-name guys. And keep in mind that manny was even colder than delgado through april, so they still have some more upside.

I think starting with the way the yankees handled bernie williams, coupled with injuries, has crushed that team and all but doomed their season. Also, Clemens hasn't exactly looked awe-inspiring against minor league batters. I expect his game will step up in majors, but the guy is 45 and could get injured at any time.

The only way I see the yankees contending is if they make some big trades, swap out some guys for pitching. Without pitching i think they are a non-starter. Right now they are 24th in league in team ERA..
