I'm sorry, but..

...Perez is not a good pitcher. Good pitchers do not walk 7 batters in two innings, load the bases with 2 outs, walk in two straight runs, then hit a batter. Period. It's time for Mets management to stop this charade of trying to fool themselves and Mets fans that Perez is anything more than he's already proven himself to be. He is the most dangerous of players - he has such raw skills and potential upside that you hate to give up on him. Unfortunately, in not giving up on him you're going to rack up 15 L's along the way. If this were early in Perez' career I might have more patience, but he's started 113 games and been in MLB for 5 years. He's not new to the game, he's not even new to the Mets or Rick Peterson. He simply does not have the control necessary for him to be successful.

In this way Pelfrey scares me a bit too, b/c he's shown a tendency to dance around the plate and throw a lot of BBs. But, at his stage of development that could easily just be chalked up to inexperience. Hopefully he'll grow out of it to be the pitcher the Mets think he can become.

In the meantime, though, I think it's time for the Mets to get serious and realize they need to pick up a legitimate starting pitcher. The loss of Pedro, Sanchez, Mota, and Bradford is too much. They need to make a trade, part ways with some of their minor league talent, and pick up a legitimate pitcher to strengthen the rotation. Otherwise, I just don't see how they beat the best teams in playoffs and certainly the best AL teams in WS.

It's also a bit troubling that so far the offense seems incapable of scoring runs except when the opposing team gives them a 4th out in an inning. Hopefully Delgado and Wright break out soon, but even if they do, it's hard to see a repeat of the staggering #s that Beltran, Delgado, and Wright put up last year. That was some massive production.

It's always refreshing to see that Mr. Negativity is alive and well...

It's as if Opening Day is Groundhog Day and SHK peeks out, sees his shadow, and declares the Mets will lose every game this year.

Dude, I thought this year the focus of the pessimism would avoid baseball at least until after the NFL draft (and the Jets annual botch-job).

Ha, I knew I'd take some heat for (perhaps unwarranted) bitterness this early in the season (remember who called Wagner for you though!!) I'm definitely way more up on Metties than my rant makes it seem, I just have no tolerance for that kind of sloppy pitching performance, especially against a division rival. I'm up on jetties, i'm thinking they'll do well in draft with man-gina at the helm..

I'm basically taking it for granted that we will win NL east - we have enough talent that we should top braves and phillies. So, i'm looking at our team and looking ahead to playoffs and WS, trying to see what weaknesses we have when we face top competition. I think mets are going to have to bite the bullet and trade some of their young talent to get a #1 or #2 pitcher.

I'm assuming sanchez is done for year or most of it, mota's probably a wash too (most players stink year after they drop the 'roids), and burgos is the same as perez - live arm, tons of Ks, but little control. I'm expecting great stuff out of pedro - i think he is really focused, and will greatly benefit from putting on muscle in offseason. But perez and pelfrey make me nervous..

Love what i'm seeing out of joe smith - his pitches have crazy movement, if he can consistently throw strikes he will become dominant out of pen. And of course, jose jose jose seems to be always improving, playing even better than last year.

Easily the best line in the blog's brief history.

I said the same thing last year on Perez. His stuff is filthy, but he can't be trusted. That said, there are plenty of pitchers who don't find themselves until years into the majors. Jamie Moyer was mentioned tonight by Gary Cohen as an example. Came into the league in '86, and apparently wasn't really effective until 6 or 7 years later.

That said, I'd still bet against Perez.

Putting Pelfrey into the same conversation is plain loco. The guy has like 4 ML starts.

I agree, I'm definitely not comparing Pelfrey to Perez. My only point is that if this team really wants to make a run at WS this year, it's a tough time to have so many question marks in starting staff (whether those questions are due to Perez's jekyll and hyde routine, or just due to lack of history as for pelfrey). And let's be honest - glavine and el duque are old, it's hard to expect a full healthy year of service into the playoffs from both of them. I certainly hope we get that, since neither one is a particularly hard thrower it should minimize their wear and tear.

If it were up to me, perez would be gone, and we would trade for another starter. Then keeping pelfrey in as #5 is minimal risk, and almost pure upside.

The real question here is: who do we go and get? During the pre-season I heard Mark Buerele's name bandied about but that's it.

With starting pitching at such a premium, who's gonna make a decent pitcher available this early in the season?

I think we may need to wait until the deadline is closer before anyone will want to talk trade.

Absolutely. Until June rolls around, the only real options are Sele or Park. If Perez has another couple of outing like his last, I'd bet Park will be in the rotation sooner than later.

I heard the buehrle thing too, and i've also seen rumors about johan santana. I would be willing to part with a lot to get santana. of course, once he's a free agent after '08 mets should bid a lot for him.

If we got him as free agent, we'd have: santana - pedro (maybe) - pelfrey - humber - maine, with reyes, wright, beltran, milledge, carp, gomez, and fernando martinez for years to come.

on another note, sounds like pedro continues to make solid progress in rehab, very promising. put on 10-20 lbs of muscle in offseason, should help his strength and stamina down the line.

Hopefully in tomorrow's game with Nats we don't continue to make their staff look like all-stars. I know it's cold out there, but time to get some runs without needing errors from opponent..

Fans really tearing into mets on metsgeek.com. Beltran, Wright, Duque, our complete lack of any intimidating pinch hitters off the bench,...
